The story behind our ukulele group
By Bobbie Smith, Volunteer Coordinator
Being curious about the inspiration and vision behind the wonderful ukulele group, Playalong, I recently spoke with our dedicated volunteers Nigel, Linda, Linden, and Carole, who have worked together to create this uplifting activity that brings joy to many.
The idea for Playalong was sparked by a shared love for music and a desire to create something inclusive and fun. As Nigel explained:
“We wanted to bring people together through the joy of music. The ukulele is such an accessible instrument – it’s perfect for beginners and experienced players alike. We wanted to show that anyone can play and have a good time.”
The group’s vision is simple but powerful – to encourage participation, connection, and a sense of accomplishment. Whether strumming along to well-loved classics or learning something new, Playalong isn’t just about music – it’s about building a community.
Thanks to the passion and enthusiasm of Nigel, Linda, Linden, and Carole, Playalong has become a cherished part of our activities. Their collective energy is infectious, and their sessions always leave us smiling.
We’re so grateful for our musical wonders and the joy they continue to bring!
“Joining the Playalong Ukulele group has been such a joy! It’s wonderful that we’ve been given the opportunity to learn and play amongst friends. We truly appreciate the volunteers who generously give their time to guide us as we pick up this new hobby,” says Sylvia with a warm smile. When asked what she gets out of playing, she cheekily adds, “To annoy my family!”
