“My first couple of weeks volunteering at Abbeyfield Southern Oaks was one of the best work experiences I have ever had. From day one, I was fully supported by staff in order for me to gain the most out of my volunteering.
I met so many lovely people; the residents were always welcoming and told me amazing stories about their lives. I got to see life from a new perspective and has subsequently, helped build my confidence. My main goal was to develop my communication skills and Bobbie (the volunteer coordinator), ensured that was consistently achieved.
I would highly recommend Abbeyfield Southern Oaks for volunteering, because you can learn so much whilst making a difference in someone else’s life. As a student, I can confidently say that they were understanding of the demands of balancing my schooling and free time by helping me fit in the right hours around my schedule, which I really appreciated. So, I was able to volunteer at a residential home whilst continuing my studies.
If you decide to volunteer at Abbeyfield Southern Oaks, you will definitely meet amazing people and be able to find the kind of volunteering or work experience that’s right for you!”
Rania has been working to a bespoke volunteer plan with the desired outcome of experiencing first-hand, how staff work with residents and also to build on her communication skills.
She has embraced the lively atmosphere at Nonsuch Abbeyfield, connecting with residents and visitors as they came and went through reception. Focusing on meaningful interactions and enhancing her communication skills, Rania made everyone feel welcome.
Rania is also developing one-to-one friendships with some residents, getting to know them and their interests.
Bobbie Smith, our Volunteer Coordinator said, “It was a pleasure having Rania with us during her work experience and volunteering. She approached every task with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to connect with others. Watching her grow in confidence and communication skills was truly rewarding, and I have no doubt she will continue to thrive in all she does.”
